Communications Associate

The Metropolitan Planning Council communications associate will, under general direction, design, develop, and produce a variety of multimedia graphics – including print materials, audio and video projects, and web site content—and support a variety of external marketing and internal communication activities.

Position priorities

Multimedia Production
• Web/Electronic Media: Design and create computer-based, web-based, or multimedia-based layout, graphics, animation, video, photos, sound and/or content for use in presentations, video productions, multimedia programs, web sites, CDs, DVDs, e-mails, and other digital media; work with project teams to review options and programming needs; develop layout design and concept, select and secure appropriate illustrative materials to be used; help to maintain and update web sites; ensure consistency, accuracy and compliance with required standards; proofread copy; maintain internal posting of policies, forms and related data; researches and learn new web and social media tools.

• Graphic Design/Print Materials: Prepare and provide print-based publications, newsletters, and other print documents using professional page layout and graphic design software; proofread copy for accuracy, grammar, punctuation, consistency and formatting; maintain integrity of brand identity, consult with designers and printers regarding format and print specifications.

• Photo/Video/Audio Production: Perform technical duties in the production of video and audio projects, CDs/DVDs, video streaming, and other field and studio video and audio productions; may take photos for web, video, print publications, and media use; edit and manipulate photos; maintain and organize digital video, audio and photograph archives.

• Technical Support: Provide technical consultation to staff; research new technology and trends; contact vendors to research products and resolve technical problems; make recommendations to department for software and equipment purchases.

Event Management
• Speakers/Special Guests: Follow up to secure speakers and guests for a range of events, including Leadership Circle breakfasts for major donors; assist with event planning and logistics, as well design, production and distribution of invitation and promotional materials.

• Sponsorship: Work with project managers to secure sponsorship for Roundtables and other forums, ensure sponsor visibility, and prepare fulfillment reports (that includes media hits, photos, web hits, and other indicators).

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will:
• Think strategically about promoting the organization’s mission and issues, synthesize complex issues, and present them to the general public.
• Be committed to the principles of sensible growth and coordinated regional planning.
• Possess initiative, creativity, and good organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as be responsible, outgoing, independent, and hard working.
• Know the principles and techniques of effective new media communications.
• Demonstrate keen attention to detail, correct grammar, spelling, and proper style of expression.
• Be a self-starter, able to manage multiple projects and competing demands effectively, and meet deadlines.
• Be familiar with social media opportunities.
• Work well under pressure and maintain good working relations with staff.

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field.
• One to three years of demonstrated experience in multimedia design or production, including audio, video, print and web.
• Desktop publishing skills, particularly experience with Adobe Creative Suite and/or Quark.
• Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Proofreading or editing skills a plus.
• Spanish-language skills a plus.

Supervision, Salary & Benefits

The communications associate will report directly to MPC’s communications director. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. MPC provides an excellent health and life benefits package.
