PROFESSIONAL STAFF Community Building Associate
The Metropolitan
Planning Council (MPC) seeks a motivated individual to forward MPC's Community
Building Initiative, which directly assists communities through a variety of
technical assistance efforts that help promote:
- Community revitalization
- Housing in job rich areas
- Sustainable development and conservation
- Inter-jurisdictional and corridor planning
Responsibilities:
- Manage and staff direct technical assistance efforts that help communities
throughout the Chicago region grapple with the above development challenges
- Help to identify, recruit, and support volunteer experts to assist
communities
- Work with partnering organizations such as the Chicago Metropolitan Agency
for Planning, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and Urban Land Institute-Chicago to
ensure technical assistance is coordinate, leverage, and strengthened in the
region.
- Contribute to and oversee technical assistance work and final report
production
- Work with MPC's Boards and Committees to identify, select, and administer
Community Building Initiative projects
- Help to develop project strategies, resources, and parameters using MPC's
project management tools and by coordinating with MPC staff and board
- Track success of Community Building Initiative projects by maintaining
ongoing relationships with past community partners
- Represent and promote MPC's mission and programs.
- Research and document local and nationwide best-practices related to
housing, transportation and community development.
- Promote Community Building Initiative success through educational efforts,
publications, and outreach throughout the region.
- Organize public events and MPC committee meetings, and generally help
advance the annual work plan.
- Write reports, newsletter, web articles and letters to the editor.
Qualifications Sought
- Familiarity with housing, transportation, and community development issues
in the Chicago region.
- Three or more years related experience working in planning, housing,
policy, and/or community development.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies,
including government officials, developers and community-based organizations.
- Strong analysis, written and oral communication skills required.
- Computer literacy, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work
well on teams is a must
- Familiarity with the real estate development process, finance, and
incentives is a plus.
- Graduate degree in urban planning, public policy or related fields
preferred.

Housing Associate
The Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) seeks a motivated
individual to forward MPC's Workforce Housing Collaboration efforts and increase
policy and production activity which supports the full range of quality housing
options near jobs and transit in the
region
and statewide.
Responsibilities:
- Support outreach and education activities to promote inter-jurisdictional
workforce housing collaborations between municipalities in the region
- Work with individual municipalities and collectively with partnering
municipalities to define inter-jurisdictional housing trust fund program
parameters, expand existing or create a new inter-jurisdictional
administrator, identify partnering agencies, leverage state incentives and
resources, and set goals for the fund.
- Work with internal Employer-assisted housing staff, employers, and other
potential partners to support housing trust fund efforts and identify
opportunities for private investment in the fund.
- Support development activity which meets the Housing Endorsement Criteria
approved by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, via program support,
communications, advocacy and technical assistance.
- Advance policy change at the local, state and federal level in support of
the above development activity.
- Coordinate with appropriate partners in the civic community, tapping into
existing networks and communication vehicles.
- Represent and promote MPC's mission and programs.
- Research and document local progress and nationwide best-practices,
related to a more equitable distribution of quality housing options near jobs
and transit.
- Organize public events and MPC committee meetings, and generally help
advance the annual work plan.
- Write reports, newsletter, web articles and letters to the editor.
Qualifications Sought:
- Familiarity with housing and community development issues in the Chicago
region.
- Three or more years related experience working in housing development
and/or policy.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies,

- Familiarity with affordable housing finance is a plus.
- Graduate degree in urban planning, public policy or related fields
preferred.

MPC's Public Housing in the Public Interest agenda, including increasing the
audience of informed stakeholders committed to improved public and mixed-income
housing communities.
Responsibilities:
- Research and write publications (including newsletter
and web articles) about the Chicago Authority's Plan for Transformation and
other related topics
- Manage and provide project management and technical assistance to pilot
programs such as the Regional Housing Initiative, the Portability
Pilot
(related to service coordination and development activities with the Housing
Choice Voucher) with regional public housing authorities, state agencies and
other partners
- Organize public events, roundtables and meetings
- Represent MPC in various housing and planning
activities.
- Assist MPC's broader housing and sensible growth policy agenda.
Qualifications Sought:
- Familiarity with housing and community development
issues in the Chicago region.
- Three or more years related experience working with
public housing authorities and/or affordable housing communities and tenants.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse
constituencies, including government officials, tenant leaders and
community-based organizations.
- Strong analytical, written and oral communication
skills required.
- Computer literacy and organizational skills are also
a must.
- Proficiency with ArcGIS and related
technologies preferred.
- Graduate degree in urban planning, social service or related fields
preferred.
