Business Leaders for Transportation was created in 1997 to operate as a collective voice for Chicago-area employers, providing advocacy for policy and funding on surface transportation issues critical to the region. Led by the Metropolitan Planning Council, Chicago Metropolis 2020 and Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Business Leaders for Transportation is a growing alliance of over 180 business organizations representing more than 12,000 regional employers.

Business Leaders for Transportation was created in 1997 to operate as a collective voice for Chicago-area employers, providing advocacy for policy and funding on surface transportation issues critical to the region. Led by the Metropolitan Planning Council, Chicago Metropolis 2020 and Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Business Leaders for Transportation is a growing alliance of 100 business organizations representing more than 10,000 regional employers.

Business Leaders has been actively involved in the following activities:

  • Monitoring Illinois FIRST implementation
  • Commenting on toll/highway proposals
  • Fast-tracking transit fare coordination
  • Reforming the regional transportation planning process
  • Improving Clean Air Act compliance
  • Advocating for a regional freight action agenda focusing on capital investments in the freight transportation infrastructure
  • Leveraging major funding for major transit projects

Its efforts helped accomplish passage by Congress of the Federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) in 1998, and the Illinois legislature's enactment of the Illinois FIRST infrastructure program in 1999.

Business Leaders Priorities:

  • To serve as the leading voice for Chicago-area businesses on transportation issues
  • To increase transportation funding for northeastern Illinois
  • To facilitate public and private efforts to assure the Chicago region's continued dominance as a freight transportation center
  • To encourage Clean Air initiatives
  • To assure that transportation investments are consistent with a fully integrated land use and transportation plan for the region
  • To assure efficient and convenient transportation options for the Chicago region
