Wall Street Journal highlights employer-assisted housing

In its March 4, 2003 edition, the Wall Street Journal profiled companies around the country that offer employer-assisted housing programs.  Why, given the “loosening” labor market, would an employer help workers buy homes, the article asks?  “Loose markets don’t last forever. And a small but growing movement called employer-assisted housing aims to tie workers to their employers with the many benefits, both financial and psychological, of homeownership.”

The article describes incentives provided in Illinois to encourage employer-assisted housing programs.  The Illinois Housing Development Authority offers Matching funds and tax credits to make employer-assisted housing programs even more appealing to Illinois companies. Medela, in McHenry, Ill. and Seaquist Perfect in Crystal Lake recently launched programs for their employees.  “We would like to be the employer of choice in the county,” Medela’s human resources director said in the article. Click here for the full article.
