The Case for Joining Forces: Affordable Housing and Quality Education

“Fifty Years Later: Brown v. Board of Education and Housing Opportunity,” the Sept. 2004 NIMBY report published by the National Low Income Housing Coalition , examines the historic connections between fair housing and school desegregation efforts. MPC’s work is featured in the concluding article, “The Case for Joining Forces: Affordable Housing and Quality Education,” by Scott Goldstein and Robin Snyderman .

In addition to pointing out the public policy connections between the affordability of housing and the quality of education in a state so reliant on property taxes to fund its schools, the concluding article also speaks to the value of connecting the different advocacy groups currently working on housing and education. MPC’s work with A+ Illinois, Housing Illinois, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, and the Governor’s Housing Task Force are all featured to illustrate the value of such a joining of forces.
