Planning group to push for developer incentives

While certification under the LEED standards has become a hot topic for office projects, a regional planning group will be seeking similar incentives for neighborhoods.

The Metropolitan Planning Council plans to seek state incentives for residential developers building in neighborhoods that are environmentally friendly under the guidelines of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.

“It would be a way to reward developers who are considering proximity to mass transit, open space ... and using energy efficient materials,” said Scott Goldstein , vice president of policy and planning for the MPC during a media event Tuesday designed to highlight the MPCs upcoming goals.

The so-called LEED-ND designation is a measure that will be pushed in the General Assembly by the MPC during the upcoming session. The goal is to find more developer incentives at a state level.

“What we’re seeing is that a lot of green incentives are focused on the materials used to build, but not on the distance people have to drive to get to that building,” said Michael Davidson, manager of the Campaign For Sensible Growth , of which MPC is a lead member.
