In memoriam

Jean Allard

Jean Allard

MPC lost two amazing former leaders in 2012. In January, we joined the civic and business communities in mourning the passing of Jean Allard, president of MPC from 1991 to 1995, who made a career out of breaking new ground. In 1953, Jean was the only woman to graduate among her original law school class at the University of Chicago, and later—within three years of graduation—was appointed assistant dean of the Law School. She was the first women partner of the law firm Sonnenshein Nath and Rosenthal; first woman on the boards of Commonwealth Edison, LaSalle National Bank, and Marshall Fields; and a founder of the Chicago Network, an organization of the region’s most respected professional women. As president of MPC, and one of the first civic leaders in Chicago to herald the concept of regional problem solving, Jean formed the Regional Cooperation Initiative. After she stepped down and returned to legal practice, MPC created the Jean Allard Regional Trailblazer Award, named permanently in her honor.

Jean Allard

Dorothy L. Rubel

In August, we were saddened by the loss of Dorothy L. Rubel, at age 108, MPC executive director from 1943 to 1974. In 1953, she widely publicized the squalid, dangerous conditions of Chicago’s slums by taking Chicago Daily News reporters with her on tours of some of the city’s most downtrodden areas. The horrifying stories that resulted—including that of a toddler whose nose was chewed off by a rat—secured a unanimous vote by the Illinois State Legislature for the Illinois Urban Community Conservation Act of 1953. In the 1950s and '60s, Dorothy led the organization in expanding its mission to encompass not only housing, but the full array of regional growth issues, including transportation and land use. MPC established its hallmark as a trusted liaison during this time, forming partnerships among new and existing stakeholders in an ever-growing and changing northeastern Illinois. In 1977, Dorothy and her husband moved to Tucson to be closer to their son and grandchildren. Clearly not ready for retirement, Dorothy became the co-creator and founder of the University of Arizona's Humanities Program.
