People do not ride buses or trains for the sake of riding buses and trains. They ride them to get somewhere—jobs, hospitals, libraries, stores, homes. Connectivity must be a goal of any new transit investment in order to reap the greatest economic and community benefits.

The nonprofit Chicago-based Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC) has created a new way of screening and prioritizing transit projects to accomplish much more than simply moving people from point A to point B. MPC tested its method, which uses 14 quantifiable "livability metrics," to envision a 10-route Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network for Chicago. This groundbreaking new approach can be readily adapted to enable cities and regions to make better investment decisions.

On Thursday, Aug. 18, join MPC for an interactive webinar examining the logic and methods behind the findings of its report Bus Rapid Transit: Chicago's New Route to Opportunity. During this 30-minute webinar, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. CDT, researchers will explain why they developed the route screening tool and livability metrics, how it is making a difference in the proposed BRT network in Chicago, and what potential it could have to change how regions invest in transportation.

Speakers
Josh Ellis, BRT Project Manager, Metropolitan Planning Council
Joshua Anderson, Lead Researcher, Bus Rapid Transit: Chicago's New Route to Opportunity
Annie Weinstock, U.S. BRT Program Director, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy
