MPC by the Numbers: 2011 Edition

It's that time again, the season when we take stock of all we've accomplished in the past 12 months and make plans for what we hope to achieve in the coming year. While there's something exciting about a brand-new calendar, filled with nothing but promise, taking a few moments to look back is rewarding. 

By no means an exhaustive list, MPC by the Numbers: 2011 Edition is a numeric snapshot of our most rewarding milestones since Jan. 1, 2011. Drawn primarily from data and indicators MPC tracks on a quarterly basis, these figures represent hours of work by staff and volunteers to achieve policy and on-the-ground wins—all of which add up to a more sustainable, equitable and competitive greater metropolitan Chicago region. These numbers motivated us to set ambitious goals for 2012, and we hope they inspire you to continue to support our work. 

Organizational success

77 Years since MPC was founded.

136 Volunteer members of MPC’s Board of Governors, Committees and Resource Board. 

3 New members of MPC's Board of Governors: Robert T. O’Brien, Deloitte & Touche LLP; Kathleen O’Leary, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO); Matt Reilein, JPMorgan Chase.  

9 New Executive Advisors: Laurent Auguste, Veolia Water N. America; Raymond Bachant, Bombardier Transportation N. America; Mitchell S. $311,000 Net revenue from 2011 Annual Luncheon to support MPC programs.

Community outreach

To inform our policy work, MPC partners with local communities to solve specific development challenges. 

35 Communities working together and with MPC to solve shared development challenges through interjurisdictional collaboration in the North Shore, and in Northwest, West, and South Cook County.

9 Communities that participated in Homes for a Changing Region, led by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus and Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), and supported by MPC, to help municipalities plan on their own and with neighboring communities to meet future housing needs.

8 Web applications (or "apps) submitted to the Metropolitan Planning Council Placemaking division in the Apps for Metro Chicago Illinois competition. The winning app, Mi Parque, is a bilingual app that will help keep local stakeholders in Chicago's Little Village involved and informed in shaping plans for a much-needed new park.

81 Residents from Chicago’s Bronzeville community who participated in a planning meeting to develop a focused retail strategy for the neighborhood. Also, 13 economic development experts donated two days of their time and expertise to help identify a plan to boost retail in the community. They interviewed 78 residents and stakeholders as part of the process.

260+ Village of Lake Zurich residents who responded to a community survey that guaged their own habits related to water use and their concerns about local water resources management. The survey informed MPC's work, in partnership with CMAP and Center for Neighborhood Technology, to advise the Village on an integrated water resources management plan.  

13,722+ Subscribers who receive the What Our Water’s Worth e-newsletter, an MPC and Openlands product to raise awareness about the value of water in our region.  

6,770 Subscribers who receive Talking Transit, MPC’s twice-monthly e-newsletter on transit innovations.

1 New e-newsletter launched, EAH Advantage, MPC's quarterly e-newsletter about Employer-Assisted Housing. More than 1,600 people subscribe.

2 Urban Exchange events hosted in Northwest Indiana by the Gary and Region Investment Project, featuring then-Youngstown, Ohio, Mayor Jay Williams; and Audrey Russo, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Technology Council. The Urban Exchange series allows local and national leaders to share best practices for revitalization, inspires local leadership, cultivates partnerships, and draws more national attention to Gary and Northwest Indiana. 


Policy wins

MPC’s advocacy and technical assistance helped shape and support sensible regional development initiatives in 2010.

1 Bill (HB 1091), the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for Transportation Act, approved by the Illinois General Assembly to promote the sound development and operation of transportation facilities in Illinois, by authorizing PPPs for the construction of new transportation infrastructure projects and limiting the lease of existing infrastructure assets. 

10 Potential Bus Rapid Transit routes in Chicago identified by MPC's August report Bus Rapid Transit: Chicago's New Route to Opportunity. This network, spanning nearly 100 miles, would be feasible to construct in Chicago, improve the use of the entire public transit system, and help people access jobs, shops, schools, hospitals, and other destinations. 

New Commute Options pilot program, through which MPC, in partnership with Civic Consulting Alliance, is working with local employers to survey their employees about their commuting patterns and design incentives that encourage employees to try alternative commutes, rather than driving solo to work. 

9 Employers in northeastern Illinois participating in the Commute Options pilot program.

3,841 Employees in northeastern Illinois benefitted from housing counseling and education since MPC launched its Employer-Assisted Housing (EAH) initiative in 2000. 

2,500+ Employees in northeastern Illinois received downpayment assistance from their employers to purchase a home closer to work since 2000. 

$9 Million Employer dollars invested in EAH since 2000.

$2.3 Million+ Public dollars invested in EAH since 2000.

12 New EAH programs in development or operational across the country (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Florida, NW Indiana, Massachusetts, DC; Johns Hopkins; Nevada Union; Mississippi, New Orleans, Tacoma), thanks to MPC’s start-up consulting assistance. 

5 Partners (Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Denver, Honolulu, Madison, Seattle region) including EAH and employer engagement as a significant element of their Sustainable Communities Initiative Planning/Challenge Grant program.

10 “Bring Workers Home” workforce housing forums organized in partnership with the National Association of Realtors and National Housing Conference from 2008 through 2011.

62 Local Technical Assistance Project grants awarded by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to communities around the region to help them plan for their futures in accordance with the GO TO 2040 comprehensive regional plan. 

29 Local Technical Assistance Projects currently active, 7 of which MPC is supporting.

$56.9 Million Invested in new housing, economic development, or infrastructure investments in northeastern Illinois, since 2005, as a result of MPC’s Community Building Initiative.

342 Affordable homes created or preserved as a result of MPC’s Community Building Initiative since 2005.

71 Percent of MPC’s Community Building Initiative partners have or are in the processing of implementing at least one priority recommendation made through MPC’s technical assistance.

3 Interjurisdictional collaborations (representing 30 communities) in metropolitan Chicago that have hired a housing coordinator, with support from The Chicago Community Trust, Grand Victoria Foundation, and Field Foundation, to increase their capacity to address area housing needs. The coordinator also will support their participation in Homes for a Changing Region, to plan for future housing needs.

62+ Housing units that are being rehabbed in the South and West Cook County Collaboratives' member communities, including a 26-unit rental building in Maywood. The first new homeowners have started to move in to the rehabbed units.

$29.4 Million in competitive federal funding awarded to South and West Cook Collaboratives to support sustainable development. Most recently, on Dec. 3, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development directed a $2.9 million Sustainable Communities Initiative Challenge Grant to the West Cook County Housing Collaborative.

Energy-efficiency programs implemented to ensure Neighborhood Stabilization Program funding (for foreclosure recovery) is promoting green, affordable homes. 

4 Suburban residential properties approved in 2011—comprising 273 total apartments and 63 affordable options within mixed-income communities in Evanston, Melrose Park, Mount Prospect and Oak Park—thanks in part to the Regional Housing Initiative (RHI).  

5 RHI residential properties, approved in 2008 and 2009, became ready for occupancy in 2011—three in Lake County, one in Skokie, and one in Woodstock, comprising 585 total apartments and 141 affordable options within mixed-income communities.

$211 million in Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority funds that leveraged an additional $329 million in private sector investments and local, state, and federal public resources to support targeted reinvestment in Northwest Indiana.

$200,000 Awarded by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency through the Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant to Chicago's 35th Ward to finance local green infrastructure improvements to reduce flooding and manage stormwater. 

$15.8 Million in State of Illinois funding allocated to the University of Illinois' Prairie Research Institute, restoring threatened funding that is necessary to support the work of the Ill. State Geological Survey and Ill. State Water Survey.
