New thinking needed

Letter to the editor from Campaign for Sensible Growth Manager Ellen Shubart.
Over the past three years, the Campaign for Sensible Growth, together with other community, business and government leaders, has argued for continued strong development in Illinois, backed by good planning. This year, the campaign and its members put forth initiatives that would help solve congestion problems, help alleviate air pollution and foster more livable communities for our region and our state. Among the proposals: Live Near Work, creating a fund to match an employer's investment in helping employees buy homes near their jobs; Local Legacy, aiding municipalities and counties inventory their natural resources and cultural assets so they can plan to save them, and a technical assistance grant fund, helping communities plan effectively for coordinated growth. But these bills — despite broad support from mayors, developers and environmentalists and a sincere interest by many legislators to offer local residents more transportation and housing options — hit the roadblock of not enough time to consider new ideas during the General Assembly's last session. The Campaign for Sensible Growth will be working closely with the Illinois Growth Task Force this summer to build momentum for meaningful action on balanced growth in the fall veto session. It is time Illinois joined other states, including neighboring Wisconsin, in fostering new thinking and new planning that will allow Illinois to grow, and grow sensibly.
