Illinois’ tangled web of 7,000-plus governmental units includes nearly 50 different categories, many developed decades ago under different conditions. Regional demographics, geography and technology all have evolved, yet in many cases we’ve failed to adapt these government institutions and systems. The result is a highly fragmented system that leads to ineffective and duplicative service delivery, waste, poor accountability and high levels of voter apathy.
MPC is fostering government collaboration and consolidation in Illinois by examining and questioning long-standing barriers to efficiency, conducting rigorous analysis, educating local government leaders, and building an alliance of Illinois policy makers, under the banner Transform Illinois, to lead the charge toward efficiency.
