Shehara Waas

Shehara joined MPC in November 2016 and brings her penchant for data analysis, research and writing to her role as a research associate. In collaboration with MPC’s director of research and evaluation, Shehara aids staff with data and analysis needs across several program areas, including Productive Lands, Water Supply, Great Rivers Chicago and the Cost of Segregation initiative.

Shehara received her master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy in 2016. During her graduate school career, she was a staff writer for The Chicago Policy Review’s Energy and Environment division, and served a leadership role in Harris’ Community Action Bureau—an initiative to pair policy students with local community organizations in need of research and data assistance. While at UChicago, Shehara also completed a research internship with the Fresh Taste philanthropy initiative—a collective of 12 Chicago-area foundations committed to improving the accessibility of fresh and healthy food for Chicagoland residents.

Prior to graduate school, Shehara served as a member of the AmeriCorps National Civilian and Community Corps, working as a consultant for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Office of Environmental and Historic Preservation. Her interests in environmental policy and planning stem from her time as an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science. Shehara grew up in Ann Arbor, and still sports her Michigan gear with a healthy sense of Wolverine Pride. She lives in Lakeview, and in addition to being an avid theater-goer, enjoys cooking, playing board games, reading and exploring the city’s amazing restaurants.
